The Starting Point
The client operates in Bosnia and Herzegovina's industrial minerals sector, supplying calcined dolomite to regional steel producers and refractory manufacturers. Their existing shaft kiln operation faced mounting challenges: inconsistent product quality, high fuel consumption per tonne, and limited scalability.
With demand for high-activity calcined dolomite growing across Central and Eastern Europe, they needed a production line that could deliver consistent quality at scale. They came to us with three requirements: high and uniform calcination degree, fuel efficiency, and a system that could be operated by local staff without constant manufacturer support.
Why They Chose Henan Hongke Machinery
After evaluating multiple suppliers, the client selected Henan Hongke Heavy Machinery for three specific reasons:
First, our rotary kiln design for dolomite calcination. The Φ2.5×50m configuration provides the residence time and temperature profile required for complete decomposition of both calcium and magnesium carbonates — CaCO₃·MgCO₃ → CaO·MgO + 2CO₂ — at 1,100–1,250°C.
Second, our experience with dolomite specifically. This is not a cement kiln repurposed for dolomite. The refractory lining, burner configuration, and internal heat exchange elements are designed for the chemical environment of dolomite calcination, where the high CaO content in the product is aggressive toward certain refractory types.
Third, our one-stop capability. The client needed a complete line — feed system, kiln, burner, cooler, dust collection, controls — not a collection of components from different vendors. We supplied the entire system.
What We Delivered
A complete dolomite calcination production line built around a Φ2.5×50m rotary kiln.
Key specifications:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Kiln dimensions | Φ2.5m diameter × 50m length |
| Application | Dolomite calcination |
| Operating temperature | 1,100–1,250°C (calcination zone) |
| Fuel | Pulverized coal / natural gas (dual-fuel capable) |
| Design throughput | 200 t/d class |
| Drive | Main gear drive with auxiliary motor |
System components:
Rotary kiln — with optimized L/D ratio of 20:1 for dolomite calcination, ensuring adequate residence time (30–60 minutes) for complete carbonate decomposition
Multi-channel burner — delivering precise flame control with ±20°C accuracy in the burning zone
Refractory lining — specified for dolomite service, addressing the corrosive environment of calcined dolomite
Internal lifters and dams — enhancing heat exchange in the preheat zone
Dust collection system — cyclone + bag filter configuration
Discharge and cooling — integrated cooler for product handling
PLC-based controls — with temperature monitoring and data logging
Commissioning and Results
The installation was completed and commissioned on schedule. The production line has been operational since commissioning with the following verified results:
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Calcination degree | Consistent, meeting product specifications |
| Product quality | Stable CaO·MgO chemistry |
| Operational reliability | Continuous operation with minimal unplanned downtime |
| Fuel consumption | Within guaranteed parameters |
The client's operations team received on-site training during commissioning. Spare parts documentation and maintenance schedules were provided for long-term operation.
Long-Term Partnership
This project represents our continued commitment to the European market. The client has since returned for additional equipment inquiries, and we maintain ongoing technical support for the Bosnia installation.
For dolomite processing operations in Europe evaluating rotary kiln solutions, this project demonstrates what we deliver: purpose-designed equipment for dolomite specifically, complete system integration, and verified performance from actual operation — not catalog claims.
